Pros

Make friends, working from home option

Cons

The team leads are given the power over managing careers, have to ensure you are good with your team lead, otherwise they will make sure you do not get promoted - my team lead threaten me in a meeting that if I decide to look for another job, she will make sure I do not get it. Also, it is a very underhanded company & they squeeze employees in work to make sure they get as much as they can out of you. The worst company ever. DO NOT WORK HERE!

Pros

A lot of smart engineers. Amazing response to the COVID situation, full remote work since. Amazing technology. A huge open multicultural environment.

Cons

The company grew to be a big enterprise. A lot of politics in the middle management. One of the core values is transparency but it's not something seen around at all.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We are sorry to read about your experience and would specifically like to address your concerns regarding team health and leadership. Both topics are important to us as an organization and we take this sort of feedback very seriously. At Zalando we strive for building a culture where teams can achieve great things and talents work well together. We expect our leaders to give guidance and support to their teams. Our Founding Mindset, a guide for everyday leadership, sets leadership principles for all levels of the company. We try our best to hold leads accountable and to role model these principles, as well as use them for our performance evaluations. When it comes to new leads, we offer dedicated leadership training to ensure our new leaders have all the tools necessary to be successful in their role by understanding and contributing to our company culture. This program offers insights into our history, our culture, and helps participants to reflect on their leadership approach in the context of their new role. In addition, our leads go through performance evaluations just like the rest of the employees. We encourage leaders to nominate feedback providers from different employee groups (directs, peers, stakeholders) to receive feedback based on their functional capabilities and leadership principles. This allows us to get a holistic view of individual performance and offer further support if necessary. Our quarterly team health feedback survey (zBeat) measures culture and engagement among teams at Zalando and helps us to identify areas where we still need to improve. Our managers are responsible for reviewing the results for their team and we also offer support to help leads and teams understand their results and take action on the survey responses to grow stronger. In addition, company results are reviewed by our Management Board as well to help assess employee engagement and drive further initiatives. In case you'd like to have a further discussion and provide us with more feedback, please feel free to reach out to me Sonja Sinterhauf: sonja.sinterhauf@zalando.de

Don't do it if you have better options

Pros

Opens doors when you wanna exit.

Cons

0 control over your career. I don't exagerate. Utterly unpredictable performance appraisal & rewards. A take-it-or-leave-it kind of approach. I'm saying this as a person that was promoted pretty soon after joining. I navigated the system, but at no point I knew what was expected of me and what were the rewards. Extremely weak mid-level managers. The most unprofessional I've worked with. Pay is on average sub par and opaque. Bottom line: if you have better options, don't join.

We are grateful you took the time to write us a review and share your feedback. We are sorry to hear about your experience and would like to address your concern regarding our performance management system. With our regular talent reviews at Zalando, we try to calibrate the lead’s assessment against a talent’s peer group to maintain the performance bar and make fair decisions. We have also recently introduced new role expectations in Technology to help provide more clarity on expectations from each seniority level and how our talents can grow in their respective job family or move into a different role. Our regular development talks should enable talents to openly discuss their career aspirations, development goals and opportunities with their lead to help create a suitable development plan. We are also committed to investing in leads enablement to ensure meaningful development talks take place across our organization. As a current employee, I would encourage you to reach out to me and I would gladly discuss these and any other concerns you may have. Please feel free to contact me directly: Sonja Sinterhauf - sonja.sinterhauf@zalando.de
