Pros

Probably as good a place as any to start out in the environmental field. Pretty easy work and it's easy to work from home once in a while if you need to. Work life balance was overall good.

Cons

Tasks are fragmented and random for consultant level / junior staff. The managers will just assign them to a week of grueling field work with absolutely no context, just go put soil in jars for 10 hours a day and never try to explain what it's for or involve that person in the office portion of the process, so everyone at that pay grade is just miserable and disengaged and tend to leave after 1-3 years once they have some experience. As I was leaving there were about 6 other consultants also on their way out which was like half of that office's consultant level staff. There were also some pretty bad safety concerns with the field practices in every project I worked on. There also just doesn't seem to be much direction in management. I had days or even weeks on end where I had no real objective or thing to work on which was just really boring. The management just sort of accepts that they have high turnover within the more junior staff and some of them told me that they would rather not teach skills to junior staff because it takes time to do and they know they'll just leave. How about trying to address the reasons nobody wants to stick around instead?

Pros

Some nice amenities in localised offices/London office is great

Cons

Incredible lack of competency in management and leadership 'Culture fit' teams meaning most people are from very similar backgrounds, so new recruits that don't fit in this narrative are treated very differently Social exclusion is high and team cliques are rife Management aware of apparent exclusions but make no effort in tackling the issue Extremely difficult to gain experience in new projects unless you are one of the popular ones

Pros

Opportunties for secondments Advice for new recruits is to only accept your salary expectation plus 10-15% to cover the decuctions from your pay packet and lack of growth.

Cons

This organisation is okay in the London HQ office, Southampton (former HQ) and Manchester, but the regional offices seemed to suffer through a lack of 'favouritism'. Because we did not have the resources to win work in the surounding region, we would work on the London based projects which that office did not pick to do themselves. This has a knock on effect on opportunties to learn in your role and longenity within the company. The Organisation changed all "benefits" so that they would be deducted from the employees pre-tax pay. The only benefit is not paying tax, but you still had to do this for the Dental Insurance. It was a sly way of cutting costs. The Organisation's annual appraisal is linked to pay rises and bonus so your luck greatly depends on your department and line manager. Often this would be an excuse to give only sub inflation rises when a promotion was due. The Organisation seemed to have a recruitment drive for overheads staff. The only noticeable change was that these new positions were instructed to cut costs. One of their triumphs was to move the date at which the annual pay rise from April to June and fob off staff that this was for their benefit. High turnover of Staff and little regard from management how this means that you can stagnate in your role also.
