Pros

The company name looks great on your CV

Cons

Didn't learn anything of value. Your "line manager" does not check in regularly. When your line manager reaches out (monthly if you're lucky), they'll just be doing it so they can tick a box in their own performance reviews. You are just thrown on projects and put in the background without any real client contact. I learnt more in 1 month of mentoring than 1 year in this role.

Pros

Flexible work hours, healthy work environment and supportive team

Cons

The rigour of consulting in general can be exhausting. Small teams so more work

Pros

People do care about your growth and your wellbeing, including the more senior leadership - obviously, each partner/director are different and are willing to support to different extents. Performance is recognised internally, even if it doesn't directly translate into compensation. The culture encourages this too. Plenty of resources and learning opportunities, but if you have specific fields of learning you're interested in, you'll have to be self-driven and organised, as you won't get to do them during working hours (and this is the same in any company I would argue)

Cons

At times, to be a 'high-performer', you'll find yourself working long hours. Not the same as overseas big 4 or the MBB, but certainly more than what you are 'paid for'. Protecting work life balance therefore naturally comes at some compromise. New Zealand market is small. That means you won't always have industry or clientele continuity. You'll have to learn how to adapt very quickly and contextualise, which can be stressful when you're doing 8 projects in a year that are literally all from different markets. On the other hand, there are 'long projects' - these are less stimulating and repetitive throughout the project duration. Following on from above, it can mean that you aren't able to achieve 'depth' of skills that you might get with more specialised opportunities. The obvious flip-side is that you'd get a variety of exposures, so transferrable business knowledge and soft skills develop extremely quickly. To be fair, it's about what you want, so this isn't necessarily a 'con'.
