Not the job for those with a family!

Pros

I'm a former Malcolm Pirnie employee and was very content and satisfied with my career until the firm got bought out by ARCADIS. I chose to go to work for Pirnie 11 years ago because of the company culture and the value they placed on their employees. All this has changed and I'm now seeking other employment.

Cons

Constant pressure to maintain billability, including working overtime in order to get in your non-billable work. Very little training, guidance, leadership when taking on new responsibilities. Expectation that you need to learn anything new on your "own time". Not possible to work 32-hours a week. No value placed on retaining the best people. Bottom line is all management cares about.

Talented colleagues, truly tops in their fields.

Cons

ARCADIS has grown too quickly through acquisition. It has caused inter-corporate communication challenges. Some operating groups compete directly with their counterparts rather than combining and working toward a common goal. This also has created a highly politicized environment that ultimately may create issues.

Pros

Great co-workers (working group, office environment); flexible hours; decent benefits; lack of geographic boundaries meant plenty of networking and project opportunities for the motivated staffer; interesting work; company maintained momentum through the economic downturn.

Cons

Aggressive billable goals detracted from project quality and led to some dramatic burnouts. Frequent neglect of smaller, innovative offerings in favor of unwieldy big $ projects. Some clear geographic differences in advancement opportunities, and overall lack of advancement opportunities for primarily technical staff (salaries not matching skill and responsibility level). Slow trimming of deadwood.
