Pros

About the only identifiable "Pro" is a decent salary -- but that has far more to do with the dynamics of the oil and gas industry than with Wood Mackenzie in particular.

Cons

I was very excited about working at Wood Mackenzie, because the position I took was perfectly suited for my skills and interests. I was sorely disappointed. My immediate co-workers were just awful people: petty, arrogant (without the real achievements that might justify being so), undermining, and often outright mean. The company also lied to me about a key parameter of my job during the interview/contract signing period. I felt insulted, devalued, and I voluntarily quit -- even though I expected at the outset to be at the firm at a minimum of several years. Finally, for a data-heavy information and analytics firm....WoodMac is light on technical skill. Co-workers kept talking about their "models" of upstream research, by which they just meant: Excel files, with no actual "modeling" component to it. Being a glorified Excel jockey is fine as a job, but the way WoodMac does it is shockingly inefficient and poor.

Pros

Decent salary, if not above market average; Work load is rather ok as compared with banking and trading; Nice office location in most of cases; Used to have a lot of nice people although not any more; A good step stone for junior pros like graduates

Cons

In order to get promotion, you need to be sophisticated - stab others if he/she stands in your way; bit of "makeup" to make yourself better looking to the public. In conclusion, do not stay if you're an decent human being. Supporting functions are doggy - HR does nothing but report your dress code type of stuff to senior management; Industry expertise is not valued here as the fact does not matter - it's all about a story-telling business model; tech infrastructure is shockingly outdated; no focus on ethnicity, hence no respect on individuals who do not fit in the "stab and kill" group.

Pros

Data is 2nd to none and we hire amazing and smart people. When the project is good, it's the best place to work. The local Senior Management (leaders of the Genscape group, the PowerAdvocate group, etc.) are excellent - people you would go to the ends of the earth for. Unfortunately, they've been reduced to middle-management because a relatively anonymous group of top WM leadership thinks they know better and that the business can be run with a spreadsheet.

Cons

Leadership post-Verisk sale has only 1 goal in mind -> hit the numbers. They don't care about the people, the culture, or the clients. Everything is ethical, don't get me wrong, but they are crushing the life out of talented people because all that matters is the numbers. Our best people are quitting in droves and leadership doesn't get that it's their fault. Up until 2 years ago I would say this is the place place in the world to work. The last 2 years have been a constant decline and I'm worried.
