Good and Not so good

Pros

Good location, nice campus and office facilities, free cookies on Fridays and Breakfast on Wednesday, Summer family outing. Benefits and 401k profit share are good Good work-life balance A pleasure to work with nice and very smart colleagues

Cons

1. Beware the annual review process. The best way to describe it is draconian and demoralizing. 2. No opportunity to grow or advance. Careers die here. 3. You get 3 work at home days so choose carefully! They are intended to be used for staying home with a sick child, bad weather (hurricane/snow), waiting for a repairman, etc... 4. Weak and uninspiring management. Lots of cronyism.

Pros

There are a lot of smart people, good software. If you drink the kool-aid and buy-in to the contract, then it is probably a nice place to work, if you don't, don't even consider this company.

Cons

Glacial pace of development Very little influence due to organization structure Macintosh platform all but ignored, despite management statements to the contrary Lots of lip service to core values - not much in practice If you want to be creative - MathWorks is not the place to be

Pros

Technology driven company with exciting projects. Very stable and easily makes revenue targets because of lack of competition. Has a very good reputation amongst the Science and Engineering world because almost all students use MATLAB as undergrads.

Cons

The only way you can survive at this company is by becoming a cog in the wheel. There is only one way to do things and that is The MathWorks way. Creativity and new ideas are discouraged, unless they come from employees that have been there forever. There is no such thing as ideas adopted from the outside. Quality of first and second line managers is extremely low. Most have never seen any proper training as managers. Extremely paternalistic senior management. One of the worse places to work is Technical Marketing. There is no leadership from the marketing organization. Product direction is totally dictated by development. Technical Marketing is side stepped by sales, AEs and customers. Best way to describe their role is as "checklist marketing" ; just execute what is on the checklist. It doesn't matter if the material is used by anyone. In general it is not. If Technical Marketing disappeared tomorrow, no one would notice.
