Pros

Competitive pay. Typical Benefits package (health, 401k, insurance savings, etc). Focus on safety.

Cons

Inability to balance work & home life. Pressure to excel with little to no reward or recognition. Emphasis on safety training but sorely lacking training in processes and programs you use every day. Mixing all of that with a constantly dynamic environment educes incredible work related stress.

Pros

This company pushes for success (i.e. financial growth and profit), and is therefore performing very well in the "down economy." Sets high goals.

Cons

I put in 50 to 60 hour weeks perhaps 75% to 80% of the time, year-round. This is common-place and is expected for Project Development Engineers in Building Efficiency. This company sets extremely high goals for increased sales, shortens the time-frame for development of each project (from 10 weeks, to 8 weeks, to 5 weeks in some cases). Shorter development time-lines mean that we can deliver more projects to customers over the course of a year, which allows us to book more jobs, and increase sales and profit. However, all things being equal, compressed timelines also mean frantic employees, as we try to complete the same amount of work in half the time that we used to. This company has not figured out how to quench it's thirst for the flood of projects that have been spurred by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds, while preserving the sanity of it's employees.

Pros

The company provides good pay and better than average benefits. With Johnson Controls Inc being a large company, they have the money to build the business. There are lots of opportunities to for training, both technical and professional. The company does provide for tuition reimbersment, if you choose to pursue that opportunity. The company works very hard at being at the forefront of technology, which allows an employee to learn new and exciting programs and ways of completing their work. The company is very committed to making sure the employees are safe and well taken care of. Overall, Johnson Controls Inc is a good company to work for.

Cons

Like any large company, it is very easy to get lost in the crowd. Recognition for your daily efforts are few and far between, but there have been some changes made to address that. If you don't do something that is totally outstanding, there is never any recognition. At our local office, the middle management isn't interested in recognizing your daily contributions, unless it benefits them directly. Communication from the corporate office is adequate, but the things going on at the local level are never communicated. There have been people hired/fired for weeks without any kind of notification to the other employees. I feel I am well compensated for the work that I do, but if there was another company that I knew had a more 'family' atmosphere, it wouldn't take much to convince me to leave Johnson Controls. And I have been with the company for over eleven years.
