Pros

During my 10 years with IBM I was able to work on things that I would not have been able to do elsewhere. I also worked with some excellent colleagues.

Cons

Money. I had positive feedback on my assignments, I did "giveback", I got on really well with the customers. I got nothing from them. I had no pay rise in my last five years with the company. I believe the last pay rise that I did get, was because I caught my manager lying to me, and he was embarrassed.

Pros

Stable position once you are inside. The networking can be very useful. There is a culture of mentoring and networking that takes a certain amount of effort to get into, but does yield decent information.

Cons

Bureacratic. Poor attention to quality. Overall software product strategy is lacking. Lots of vague, insincere, old-style rah-rah. Management tends to bring in their friends rather than hire for competency. Project schedules are set without understanding the details of what the commitments entail. The product designs tend to be overelaborated and inelegant and user-hostile. They have a rigid, waterfall product management template AND they are attempting to ram agile development into it.
