Pros

If you take ownership of your responsibilities, and prove yourself, you can largely direct your own work. Management listens to your suggestions, and if they make sense, often say 'make it happen'. Very flexible schedules, and good work-life balance.

Cons

Training and personal development aren't an emphasis. You can make it happen, assuming you find free online training in the Global Campus, but it will be on your own time. This is different in different areas - some get a ton of training. Others are left to wither.

Pros

IBM is involved in just about every aspect of IT and industry in general, so it is a good place to learn lots of different things. They have a great program for workers who work out of the home. This helps to maintain work/life balance. IBM is very diverse, especially for a technology company. Lots of women and minorities. Nice to have name recognition among customers. Everybody has some basic idea of what IBM is and what the company does. From a sales perspective, IBM has broad coverage so you don't spend as much time on the road. This also helps with the work/life balance.

Cons

Large company with lots of red tape and time wasted with unnecessary tasks and training. You sometimes get the feeling that you are a very small fish in a very large pond (and you are). The training that you are required to take often has nothing to do with your job, but is required. The company is definitely run by "bean counters" so they can be very cheap at times - especially in regards to travel and expenses. While IBM has shed some of it's stodgy old school image over the past few years, it's still not a "sexy" modern IT company like Google, Yahoo, or even Microsoft.

Pros

Top notch work life balance in my line of work (IT development). I'm work at home employee since I joined IBM. People around me and in other department that I deal with are very professional. I rarely see inter office politics. I never saw intimidation, negativity towards other people etc. 1st and 2nd line managers are always straight forward with us. The company is genuinely interested in diversity. I have very decent market rate pay package. Lots of learning opportunity if you are interested. Since IBM owns numerous software development tools, they are at your disposal, free to use to further your knowledge and career.

Cons

In US locations, I see new project opportunity to on is drying up. There is lot of administrative work involved in my job as software developer and technical lead. There is more operational work then new development opportunity due to cut backs and off shoring.
