Pros

Very nice and professional engineers. I had a great pleasure to work with these people. Interesting projects, bringing a big impact to the world and users. Using the products myself up until now.

Cons

Too many managers. Too old and conservative management that keeps employees in stress and a panic mode. Power games in the higher management. Often company re-organisations that slows down development and product delivery.

Can be a great place but...

Pros

Some of the projects are interesting and challenging. Many competent people among specialists. Work-life balance. 30 working days of vacation. Flexible working hours and home office policy.

Cons

Poor and I emphasize it again POOR management, especially middle management. Many of them are busy with politics focusing on their own ambitions rather than collective goals or what is truly important for the company. They are not interested in their team members professional growth (not necessarily vertical, but horizontal development as well). There is no career progression in the Berlin office. After 3 years at HERE, I see how my peers from the US team are being promoted (even with less experience and skills). Some of them got already 2 promotions and Berlin team members - NONE, zero. This is tremendously demotivating. Talking about work will give you here more benefits than actually delivering. Corporate bla-bla is the key. Salaries in the same team are very inconsistent. Some are paid twice as much for the same tasks and levels of responsibility.

The following applies to IVI group a unit of "Services group" formerly automotive division. - Managers are old but pretty inexperienced. Continuously pushing for nearly impossible deadlines that were decided arbitrarily by themselves. Sometimes it seems their goal is just to keep their position and find someone else to do their job. - "Cheap" outsourcing is a common strategy to overcome the problem of rotten software as a result of a bad planification, lack of process and unrealistic deadlines. This outsourcing does not care about quality and creates more technical debt that generates more outsourcing. - Despite lots of product managers, no product strategy for the company. Always following car makers orders without any attempt to innovate. - No software development process whatsoever. -Long working days. Stress is normally high and can be very high before deadlines. Motivation inside the team and all around is very low. - Ratio middle manager vs software engineer is almost 1:1. As a software engineer, if you are motivated and prove to deliver on time expect to be treated like a minion and be assigned around from team to team to extinguish fires and get more pressure on you. If you don't deliver nothing will happen.
