Pros

Cons

The major project was out sourced due to limited budget, meanwhile there is an expensive and nice-looking office under construction. The people come up with the shared desk design is not a programmer. As a professional software engineer, my productivity is highly influenced by who is around me and where I sit. I want to surround by the fixed team mates. And having a table belongs to you in fact makes you feel cozy and having a strong sense of belongingness, you can put a little bit something in the desk, like a picture of your kid. And now what, I have to clean the table before I went home and lock them in a Chicken-Housed-Sized locker each day, and second day I'll be sitting somewhere else with a different guy in front of me. Some of the senior managers at HERE are living in a different world. They care about if they can get the most founded project and if they can get the resources. They are actively striving for that but have no idea how to plan the project and use the best of their resources to work with. Seems to me that the only thing they care about is how much money and power they can get. Charles Patoshik can do a better management job than those people The HR in Berlin site is unbelievably horrible. When partner moves with you from an alien country and you want to consult some issues regarding the visa of your partner. HR will tell you: "We don't care about your family". Ok then we don't care about HERE anymore, how's that sound. How would you find yourself to get payed in an IT company if there are less and less IT personals want to work there in the future?

Pros

Still a few great colleagues in the Dev Teams. Nice location and terrace. Salary was paid every month.

Cons

Most of the smart and talented colleagues have left the company or are leaving soon. The highly paid but not proportionally talented or first jobers have a good reason to stay. Higher and middle management are terrible in the Automotive group. Director looks all the times at the bug curves or features count. Quantitative old mindset manager. He yells to fix bugs or build more features (depending on the phase of the project), middle managers care only about their golden careers and whip their people to please the top management. It feels like in the 80's. A bad company from the 80's. Promotions are political, who challenges the mid management gets punished, silos culture with kingdoms and incompetent line managers taking technical decisions and competing with each others (lots of duplicate and non-sense work). No real will to improve or become a modern, attractive company for smart talented people. Agile group is another silos ivory tower and there's now also a director of agile. Mostly they're using the Spotify labels maintaining the same structure... It's a very corrupted setup. Nothing is transparent and there are hundreds of meaningless KPIs, it's hard to understand if what you or your team is implementing is useful. Finally my salary was not competitive. I started in 2016, colleagues hired before me had significantly higher salaries. Management at all levels has the highest salary and benefits, huge gap with their direct reports. All the 5 offers I've got in a month of search (same city, similar role) were 20-50% higher. The HERE golden age is over (except for managers).

Pros

Many of the people working in the Berlin office are really good professionals - they just know what they're doing. The atmosphere is OK but I wouldn't call it exciting. Much of the time it's too quiet for my taste. Style and tempo of work depend mostly on the team yet most of the time it's relaxed, overtime is neither enforced nor encouraged but leaving the office late happens every now and then. The office itself is nothing extraordinary, although it suffers from poor ventilation (especially during the summer). Location is convenient. The underground garage is overcrowded. Cafeteria is not too bad, prices are reasonable. Free warm beverages, fresh fruit twice a week. Occasional barbecues. Office equipment and hardware - no complaints (most of the people are asked what their preferences are prior to joining the company).

Cons

The company is very noticeably divided (and not only geographically) by the Atlantic. People are forming camps and trying to make themselves... important via... artificial means. Alongside the talented people, mentioned above, there are some completely clueless individuals. And the sad thing is they're not a rarity. And I very intentionally did not say "work here” as that would be... strongly inaccurate. Not to forget the ridiculous internal politics, hypocrisy and debilitating bureaucracy. It’s not unbearable if your skin is thick enough. You'll have a hard time if you are enthusiastic and career oriented. Opportunities are scarce, despite the number of open positions. It's not impossible but very difficult to progress. And keep in mind that ambition and desire for professional growth are hardly ever noticed. But if you wouldn’t mind a somewhat monotonous place to work, HERE could be the perfect fit for you!
