Pros
Management is fairly flexible with balancing life and work. However that was only my experience with a few specific managers. And by balancing I mean they let you turn down a few on the road jobs. Maybe 1 out of 10, so you can spend time with your family instead of alone in hotel room.
Cons
Working nights, weekends, traveling with very little notice. Even If you are working those types of hours/shifts/other locations you may still be scrambling to stay billable for your 40hrs. If you can't stay billable say goodbye, doesn't matter how long you have worked there. performance recognition is little to nothing. Arcadis gobbles up other successful env. consulting companies and implements their corporate structure, eliminating rewarding bonus structures, flexibility, even how clients can be acquired. Mid-level management completely loses their ability to reward their subordinates. Everything changes and their system rewards only those at the top. Working hard gets you more work, but getting a raise is near to impossible unless you get a competing job offer. No cost of living wage increases. They say its based on merit but if your managers aren't finding/giving you the work don't let the door hit you on the way out. When its busy they treat field staff like heros, but when its review time its not reflected in pay increases. Same tired lines about advancement but there is no where to advance to unless someone leaves. You can spend more time in the day looking for billable work then actually working.
