Pros

Applied Materials offers excellent compensation and benefits to its employees. The company is one of the most generous I have seen in regards to total benefits - including profit sharing, health care, tuition reimbursement and dental. It is a good company to get some initial work experience.

Cons

There is little if any career path at AMAT. Many people have worked in the same role for several years because they are afraid to move into other areas of the company - which could expose them to a higher probability of being laid off. The high number of layoffs over the past several years have hurt worker's morale and the overall culture. Ten years ago, this was a very exciting a vibrant company to build a career with and there were many young people being recruited into the organization. Today, the company has changed, and it is not the exciting place that it once was. Career advancement and opportunities are not as prevalent within the organization as they once were making it hard to advance or build a career at this company.

Pros

Highly technology oriented. It's a company filled with all sorts highly skilled engineers that makes the ideas come true. You stay with AMAT because you enjoy working with either knowledge people or experience people. However, the company can treat the employee much better than what can can do now. We are proud of being part of it, but the top management should do something to show they are proud of having the employees working for it.

Cons

Compensation and reward awarded after you did a good job.

Pros

ETEC division paid better than standard AMAT because ETEC's OT and on-call standards were inherited from Perkin-Elmer and AMAT was unable to move the ETEC non-exempts to AMAT salary standards without having a mass exodus of experienced people. Stock options were good when they were not "under water." Kaiser NW medical option was a great benefit! Good separation package at the time.

Cons

Lay-offs lurk at every downturn. Reviews are not based on your actual contribution to the business but rather on how an employee in a particular group fits on a performance curve. In other words, if everybody performs excellent in a group of 10, somebody has to fall into the standard or substandard area because the review is tied to the pay increase.
