Pros

- Good salary & perks. - #1 products on the market. - You get to work on very new technology (if you're in the good teams). - Great campus & cafeteria. - Some very good engineer still there (even though they are all leaving).

Cons

- Absolutely no recognition. You are a "resource", here to fix bugs. - Promotion are entirely left to your manager. Ancient dinosaur engineers are at highest ranks while they don't contribute, young talents do all the work and remain very low for years. - Lots of talking, no acting. Internal polls show lots of discontent but nothing ever changes... - ...besides the entire management chain which is reorganized every 6 months. Huge waste of time & money. - Nobody wants to take the lead on some tasks. Bug threads are like hot potatoes going from a person to another and nobody wants to burn its hands (who can blame them given the lack of recognition). - Some incompetent people can't help the company and to keep themselves entertained they just spend their time making your life harder. Endless reviews, extra (long) approvals, small inter-team wars. Basically everything to prevent you from having a decent time. - People leaving this sinking company at light speed.

Pros

Good compensation. Nice place in the current cloud service movement. You will gain good knowledge and make many good connections.

Cons

If you are product manager, you will feel great to work for any team inside VMware except desktop BU. The desktop BU pm team used to be a great team. However since late 2009, all of original founders who built this team decided to leave. The team was then taken over by an engineering director, who unfortunately lacks both product management experience and leadership quality. As part of the change, the BU also moved several engineering managers to this team to replace several experienced product managers. As a result, the team has been run by an arrogant yet highly inexperienced person. He basically can not and are afraid of making any strategic and operational decisions. He trusted people who shared the same qualities and can only follow his order. The morale in this team is extremely low. The team has a very bad reputation within the organization. If you are looking for a job here, my advice is to run as a crazy from this team.

Pros

Hot technology - or at least it was till ~ 2 years back. Big players seem to be moving in the market now and it is not clear whether VMW has managed to keep lead. Buzz in the area.

Cons

Internal processes non-existent - company grew too rapidly in last 3 years for its own good. Too many top management changes in last few months - as an ex: 6 CIOs in ~ 3 years. Too much arbitrary decision making, lack of transparency, mutual back scratching at the highest levels. Lack of focus on key non-product areas like customer satisfaction, internal business processes, IT applications. Poor flow of information - downwards or upwards - for a company of this size. Amazing focus on empire building rather than organization building (again gven the size of the company, it is dis-proportionately large). Lack of accountability ramapnt in the whole organization - senior 'powerful' people have lot of visibility and power but it seems they are not held accountable when things go wrong - again and again.
