Pros

VERY flexible with scheduling. Most of the executives understand that you have things outside of work to deal with like children and school. The benefits are good for being a retail store. Communication is pretty good but can be worked on a bit. Tons of boards to read along with brochures/pamphlets. The morale is ok and was way better when the store first opened. Target does a lot of fun days (such as cereal day, puzzle day, etc) and you can win cash prizes for different things too. All college students have an option to go on an educational leave of absence when going back to campus (and are able to return within 6 months to work over holidays)

Cons

Not much room for advancement. If you are interested in being an executive, you are not garanteed to be at a store close to where you live. Most of the executives travel AT LEAST 45 minutes to work every day. When a team lead position opens up, there is usually several others being interviewed and it is also posted for external applicants. Compensation could be higher. They do try to keep up with area businesses and stay at a higher rate than most. Recognition and feedback is OK... there could definitely be more. They seem to focus more on opportunities (or things you need to work on doing better). Senior leadership at a store level is not very good. They basically give all their work to people lower on the ladder than them and leave early a lot. They also take lots of long vacations! Fairness and respect needs work also. Executives tend to talk about things they shouldn't, and executives get yelled at and lectured right out in the open where anyone can hear.

Pros

It is a fast-paced, exciting environment, where you get to work with a lot of great people. You will definitely gain valuable experience that will help you in your next job.

Cons

Individual development is not a priority within Target. Senior leaders are more interested in micro-managing than developing their teams. Work-life balance is another problem at Target. They start by telling you to work a minimum of fifty hours a week, but the expectations are that you stay until everything is done. Since it is impossible to get everything done, you end up working long hours, without any additional compensation.

Pros

Very flexible with their hours and great opportunity to move up. I applied here after being a stay-at-home-mom for a number of years and cashiering is a very simple job. It is easy to do and it is great to get out of the house. They are very strict about making sure you get your breaks that are required by law. The other people that work there all seem to like their jobs and everyone has a general upbeat view of their position in the company. One thing I like is the anonymity of working with 350+ employees in one store. That can be good or bad I guess. Oh! The 10% discount is nice!

Cons

Scheduling can be messy but they are always willing to work with you. It is annoying that you tell them you are available 20 hours per week but they schedule you 30 hours per week anyway. Sometimes they schedule you 6 days out of the week and think it is no big deal. They need to hire more hourly workers. They need to stop penciling in shifts that don't work with my availability. You have to be an advocate for yourself about the scheduling or else they will walk all over you until you say something.
