Pros

Overall, Raytheon provides a good job with little risk of layoff. The starting pay is generally attractive, the performance sharing payouts are decent, and the benefits are pretty good. Work schedules are very flexible and in most situations there is no pressure to consistently work over 40 hours a week. Its a great job to have in uncertain economic times such as these if you rely on the income. Its also a great job if you want a relatively certain, steady rise in income (to my knowledge, Raytheon has never seen an across-the-board pay cut and few years with no raises at all).

Cons

High potential employees can easily hit artificial roadblocks to their career. After a few years the pace of promotions tapers off significantly. Raises are based almost entirely on performance rating; everyone in a given performance grade gets the same raise, even though one of the grades encompasses about 70% of the population. Variable pay programs are woefully inadequate. Compensation seems to be almost entirely tied to years with the company and salary grade. In addition, the company takes advantage of weak job markets and the knowledge that most people have nowhere better to go to cut the raise budgets, even if the company is doing well.

Pros

Your perspective on the employer you work for is a function of your job, the manager you work directly for, and your own outlook on life. It always amazes me that people who don't listen, don't get it, and are ultimately responsible for their own poor experience blame it on everyone else around them. They expect to be fed everything, rather than proactively get engaged and discover what the possibilities are, and how they contribute. Raytheon offers significant career opportunity, if you get engaged and take charge of it yourself. Great pay and benefits, flexible hours, and pretty strong leadership, at least in IDS.

Cons

It seems that the core group of 10% of the employees work hard, all the time. Lots of hours; if you become known as someone who can get it done - you'll keep getting more. Sometimes leadership is too focused on meeting the goal, rather than HOW we meet the goal.

Great Place to work...if you have the network.

Pros

Job Stability depending on what program/function you fulfill. Not the best benefits package around, costs have increased over the three years I've been there, but still competitive within the industry. Definitely better than the alternative... Since Raytheon is so large, there are various programs, and roles available, not to mention a wide array of national and international sites to pursue. So if you are tired of your program, location, it is very possible to move around without burning bridges with the company. If you are a top performer, and are vital to your program, you will be recognized and put on a succession plan.

Cons

Contrary to the above, if you don't have a good network, you will be just another cog in the raytheon machine. If you stay in one place too long, it becomes advantageous to your mgmt, and the program NOT to promote you. You will have to fight for every penny come review time, as the base merit raise is usually around 3%. While they SAY they pay competitively, this type of compensation structure doesn't even keep up with the cost of living, even if you get a higher than average performance review. If you aren't eligible or profit sharing, you will literally find yourself working more & more, for less and less.
