Pros

High bar for talent (you learn by your peers), makes/keeps you sharp, rational/data-driven culture, VERY people oriented, great total comp and benefits. Have more respect for Zuck since having worked here; seems candid and earnest in bettering the company's outlook. Lots of interesting product development happening consistently.

Cons

Productivity suite is chaotic / not standardized across teams (takes a lot of time managing personal comms), sometimes it can feel TOO people oriented (very surprising what can be said to managers and Zuck himself that is honestly flat out disrespectful but tolerated...also, lots of entitlement - particularly at lower levels that can make managing teams/talent tiresome). For mid-career professionals (L5-L6 in particular), advancement is tougher as the company gets bigger/evolves; seems like there are more growth opportunities for junior levels (in terms of promo: L2/L3) and senior levels (in terms of new areas of learning/expansion: L8/D1+). For SOME people, the high ambiguity, fast pace, and 99% self-determination of one's career will not fit their personal preferences. For me personally, it works well. But I have friends at the company who are quite frustrated/unhappy due to the lack of tops-down order and seemingly chaotic shifting of priorities and strategies. (Note: I work in Facebook Reality Labs, which is definitely more nascent and a bit different in flavor than the 'core apps' teams.)

Lack of Diversity

Pros

Good Benefits and flexible work arrangment

Cons

I have enjoyed working at Facebook but as a POC, I do feel that the lack of diversity has affected the quality of work we do, and diluted the creative culture at Fb. Creative teams across the company are very white, and mostly male. While I'm excited to see more roles open up in Facebook for creatives, I worry that it affords teams and management opportunities to hire more white people. Instead of bringing in someone with a different experience that is talented and deserving of an opportunity. Sadly, I've seen BIPOC candidates get shortlisted, only to not make the cut for arbitrary reasons. 'Not a good fit' is a poor reason for someone who spent the time interviewing with us with a stella portfolio. I worry that teams are only bringing in certain candidates to meet some sort of quota or to appear "exhaustive" in their search, just so that they can hire another white person. I'm tried of observing these performative acts of diversity from creative leaders across teams and hope that this changes. We can do better, we should do better.

Pros

Most skillful engineers in the country

Cons

In my position I had a lot of influence in hiring and terminating employees. I have being exposed to dubious decisions in that area by upper management, actions taken without good-heart and with conflicts of interest. This behavior could only thrive in our Cult-like company where truly speaking out your mind could hurt your career. Quite ironically, the values of giving constant feedback are encouraged in Facebook, but in reality, employees are afraid of giving negative feedback as they know the potential devastating consequences of doing so. Negative feedback will be given about technical decisions and ideas but not about managerial decisions or the human resource department from fear of upsetting the wrong people.
