Pros

MathWorks has an amazing company culture! Everyone here is so passionate about their work. Although we all sit in our own offices, we have an open door policy. Whenever I am stuck on a problem I know I can always go to my coworkers for help or advise.

Cons

One of the main downsides I have experienced is is there is no work from home policy. While it has its pluses since the office is always full of staff. It can become a pain when you have to use time of because you need to stay for some reason but are healthy to work.

Pros

Teams are small and extremely collaborative. Opportunity to work on challenging technical problems. Good work life balance.

Cons

No work from home policy Becoming increasingly process-intensive over past few years. Conflicting demands on getting new flashy features out the door versus updating legacy features that are in serious need of refactoring/redesign -- the latter usually ends up being sacrificed for the former. Lower salaries compared to similar tech companies.

EDG Program

Pros

> EDG program is like a launch pad for young & bright engineers that are looking to build a long term technical career for themselves but are unsure as to what to pursue to be satisfied > The program is multi-faceted and offers flexibility to choose projects of interest to gain skills > Opportunity to provide technical support to customers that use our products and gain insights about customer industry, workflow and most importantly how customers use our products is key. You are not left to fend for yourself but have many bright colleagues to reach out to, to get help > Work environment is pretty informal and easy-going. Higher management is easily accessible. You are not treated as an expendable commodity and your passion for technology is respected > Work-life balance is great allows you to pursue your interests outside work > Managers encourage independence & collaboration and are invested in success of engineers. They focus on providing timely coaching > Several EDG engineers are successful in multiple departments in challenging technical roles. And transfers typically happen in ~12-18 months which engineers use to figure out where their long term interest lies > EDG engineers are sought after by other departments because they possess a blend of product knowledge, customer perspective and strong technical skills Overall a great place to work especially if you are looking to build a long term career for yourself

Cons

> Working with our customers and providing them technical help is looked down upon by some. Our customers use our products to build technology that is transforming the world we live in. Helping them be successful can be pretty challenging especially working with those who are masters in their domain and on the other hand there are also customers who are beginners in our products > Understanding what customers value in our products is very important for success of a product development company like us and EDG program provides opportunities to gain such insights > EDG is not the regular cookie-cutter job. It requires one to chalk out one's own career path and demonstrate strong ownership in working towards it > Planning, multi-tasking, prioritization and most importantly motivation to learn are some skills required for success in EDG > Several engineers who are successful in their roles across multiple departments started their career in EDG soon after college. They too should consider sharing positive experiences they have had while in EDG, in public forums
