Pros

It offers a very stable, unique work environment. You may pick up new skills and learn some interesting things while there, since the process is quite foreign to an experienced worker, and being asked to adapt to "the MathWorks way" will challenge you to either learn new skills or do things very differently than you've done previously. It will stretch your repertoire. Health benefits are great, and there are some nice perks that demonstrate the company cares about taking care of their employees, and generally treating people well. It is also a great company for new graduates, and gives a lot of people a fantastic start in their careers.

Cons

The company has A LOT of process (new & untried that needs refinement; legacy; and genuinely great stuff), and is extremely structured. If you like working in an environment that is flexible, adaptive, and has a less formal approach... you will find this much like pushing a boulder up a cliff, or allowing it to roll over you. One of the mindsets is, "we've been there, done that, and whatever new ideas you may have-- they've already been tried." Getting past this mindset is nearly impossible. If you do get past it, chances are you will have proposed a new process, whether that was your goal or not. For these reasons, it is a great place for those who come to the company to be trained by and shaped in the unique process and methodologies they have instated at MathWorks.

Pros

MathWorks is a growing, highly profitable company with interesting technologies and products. Its structure -- many small highly interrelated product and market units -- should present many opportunities to innovate and take initiative. MathWorks will not tolerate abusive interpersonal behavior.

Cons

1. Numerous directors told me no one can speak directly, that it is unacceptable to discuss differences of opinions in the open. You have to do it one-on-one. This culture often makes it dangerous to take the initiative when you should. The end result is that many people settle into secure positions and stop thinking and innovating, and wait to be told what to do. Accepting this compromise is destructive for dynamic people, and in the long run it will have serious consequences for the company. 2. Management has said that the main purpose of the performance appraisal system is to improve employees through intense criticism. Recognizing contributions to the company is a secondary objective. This poor policy is compounded by the fact that the senior management lacks the insight into people and culture needed to exercise anything approaching this level of control over people. 3. The company line says this is a high trust environment. A colleague told me after he left that it is a low trust environment, and he could have survived if he had played it that way from the start. I agree with his assessment. 4. For a person who wants to do his job and go home without a lot of personal engagement, MathWorks is on balance no worse than the average company, and in some ways it is better.

Pros

I have been a part of the MathWorks team for a considerable period of time, and my experience has been a blend of positive and challenging aspects. Here's a comprehensive review of what it's like to work at MathWorks, including its strengths and areas that need improvement. Pros: 1. Friendly and Knowledgeable Colleagues: One of the standout features of MathWorks is its talented and supportive workforce. Colleagues are always ready to offer assistance, share insights, and collaborate on projects. The sense of camaraderie and the ability to learn from those around you create a positive and motivating atmosphere. 2. Free Breakfast and Lunch: The provision of complimentary breakfast and lunch is a thoughtful perk that adds convenience to our workdays. It's a small but impactful gesture that contributes to a more comfortable work environment. 3. Hybrid Work Arrangement: The flexibility of a hybrid work model, with two days working from home and three days in the office, is a positive feature that offers a balance between remote work and in-person collaboration. This arrangement accommodates different work preferences and enhances work-life balance. 4. Great Products: MathWorks is renowned for its exceptional products that are widely used in various industries. Being a part of a company that creates and supports such high-quality software solutions is both rewarding and motivating.

Cons

1. Limited Opportunities for Advancement: One significant drawback at MathWorks is the difficulty in moving up the corporate ladder. Advancement to managerial positions appears to be heavily dependent on factors beyond an individual's control, which can be frustrating for ambitious employees keen to take on more responsibility. 2. Slow Career Progression in Engineering: While dedication and contributions are recognized, the timeline for career progression, especially in engineering roles, seems unduly lengthy. Waiting 5-6 years for evaluation and advancement decisions can lead to a sense of stagnation among highly motivated individuals. 3. Communication and Leadership Style: The communication approach and leadership style, particularly from the older CEO, can sometimes raise concerns. The recent email promoting in-office work without substantial data-driven reasoning might have been better received with a more inclusive and transparent tone. As it appears, the company is rolling back the work-from-home option and is gradually forcing everyone to come back to the office full-time.
