Pros

Nice facility, good health benefits, profit dividends instead of stock options (private company).

Cons

Hierarchy of company allows for the network of managers to protect each other and perpetuate toxic culture. There's a big focus on process for many parts of the company, but not in terms of recourse for managers abusing their power. Very against remote work, and resisted it through COVID.

Pros

@MathWorks EXEMPTING the HYD office: Lot of learning, excellent peers @ Natick, very friendly and approachable managers;

Cons

@MathWorks HYD office: Senior management at the HYD office is the worst. Neither they respect nor recognize hard work. They show a lot of favouritism. Unrealistic deadlines, no proper planning, and they indirectly force people to work long hours by loading them with more work in a short period of time. They do a lot of micro management. Many of the managers show bad attitude and are not at all supportive or empathetic towards their team members. The managers lack professional ethics and any administration skills. Well, HYD office was a startup at HYD acquired by MathWorks. This is definitely one of the worst decisions that the CEO has made. The sr.management at HYD office don't lead by example. They maintain the "do as I say" mentality. They advertise MathWorks core values but never follow. It never reflects in their day-to-day activities. Be it be any company outtings or providing snacks, milk, and beverages to the employees, they always buy the cheaper ones in the market and doesn't care about the quality of the items that they buy and how it impacts an individual's health.

Great Company, OK Product

Pros

- Great company with decent pay and benefits, considering the bonus program. - Good work-life balance. You can put in extra work, but it's really up to you. This is true at least in my department. The story seems different in development. - Good company culture. People are mostly down-to-earth and friendly with the exception of some senior folks who carry a bit of "inner circle" hubris. - Another culture thing: You can always find help.

Cons

- Slow moving product that is losing traction to open-source and programming becoming more ubiquitous in science and engineering fields. - Hiring mentality that everyone is replaceable, which leads to lower salaries for tech and a critical mass of mediocre hires who are largely not independent and motivated. - Development mentality to use as little resources as possible to deliver minimum viable product that checks a box. For example, "yes, we do deep learning. Here's *a* solution". - Marketing departments specifically lacking in "doers". People constantly looking to defend old-school standpoints and justify slow development action to avoid doing any significant work. - The praise I have received from management has always been on small one-off projects unrelated to my main job rather than what I consider to be my most significant and rewarding contributions. - Location is in the suburbs, a little ways out of the city.
