Pros

Large company with over 60 years history in the defence sector. Good benefits system. Modern premisis with good facilities - on-site canteens, gym, parking, landscaped gardens, meeting rooms and video communications. Feel part of a large group, with projects all over the world.

Cons

Lack of flexibility in movement and progression through the company. Methods of working feel outdated, and could use a more modern approach to improve the working environment. Company culture seems far too orientated towards meetings and less about decison making. Hard to get work approved because nobody seems to want to accept responsibility for decisons in case they are called up on it. Not bold or dynamic enough for me. Working across many different sites even within the same project teams can slow down communication and hinder progress. Regimented and even draconian when it comes to monitoring employee progression. HR seem to have more responsibility than is beneficial, and can detract from getting on with the job. Felt there was little room to influence the company's working methods and contributions were not appreciated. Seems to be a mistrust amongst colleagues to share information and work together. Interactions with Executive levels are hierarchical and there are barriers and 'red tape' which prevent input and interaction across these levels.

Pros

The variety of work is a huge draw The on-site facilities are good Always get parking

Cons

* Hugely political * They like to show the outside world they have great benefits but it's a farce. The main benefits system isn't exactly a good deal. It's one where you have to sign up to another company to get a discount, but that discount still end's up with you paying more than if you went online! * They give monetary rewards but the process to be paid back through expenses ruins it. * They put the wrong people in jobs * They don't get the bad eggs out. Some of the senior staff are so rude and arrogant yet instead of being spoken to, they just get pushed sideways until they retire and let the minions put up with the tantrums and rudeness. * The good staff are promised things that can't be delivered, like promotion * They have a ridiculous wage rise scheme. They say it is based on performance.... but what they don't say is that each department is limited to the number of people they can put into the good/excellent categories. So you could have out performed your colleagues tenfold but it will be 'sorry, there was no quota left' * Some managers can't manage an email inbox let alone people. * They have actually told employees that no one is trusted... that's why it took a pandemic to pull them into the modern era . * Senior staff love working from home, going for runs during the day and walking the dog...but if a lower grade person wants to do the same..oh no, that's not on, they should be working!

Pros

Interesting work. Genuine opportunities to develop, if you put the effort in to take them.

Cons

Very, very, slow progression! Because this is a defence company, there is a long history defining "how things are done". That experience is important to deliver on current business, but MBDA needs to transform its approach in lots of areas. This is crucial so they can be competitive and win future business, and also in attract and retain the future workforce. MBDA are trying to strike the balance between retaining knowledge and making the transition I mentioned. Right now, they're not getting this balance right and middle to upper management are at the root of this. Senior leaders identify the problem I describe, but they are effectively powerless to do anything. They've devolved all of their influence and power into a layer of problem managers who can always justify their approach with "the way we do things" thus keeping things the same. All of this means enthusiastic and ambitious young employees are almost certainly going to feel hindered and that they can outgrow MBDA. Just give it time.
