Excellent Stepping Stone

Pros

- free breakfast, lunch and dinner and beer - flexible(ish) work environment - lots of very intelligent, cultured and worldly people - opportunity to learn a little bit of everything due to cross-functional nature of role - great product, great prospects for company growth - lots of start-ups and tech companies know Indeed, makes it easier to jump into a higher position at another company after paying your dues.

Cons

- current structure of the international team is a dead-end for most - some managers micromanage - other managers are very laid-back and people abuse their freedom - severe favoritism and fierce internal politics within certain regional teams - frequent 'promotions' are merely title changes with few, if any, extra responsibilities, power, or influence - some managers do not keep up with their responsibilities resulting in team members having to pick up the slack - managers taking credit for work their team does - lack of mentorship or general guidance - country managers with heavier workloads have less opportunity to take on extra projects than those with easier workloads - it is necessary to FIGHT for ownership of a project when something out of the routine pop ups - good luck moving to another team within the company. you'll have to find and train your own replacement, basically. it's taken some up to a year after getting the job before they can make the move.

Very Young Company - but not always in a good way

Pros

Company is very solid. Great revenue, runs lean, upper management are genuinely great people. Fun. Their internal social application is really nice for creating a collaborative environment and getting to know people within the company. The ramp up quota is fair. Compensation is competitive, though not sustainable in how it's implemented. Probably would have stayed longer, but I just had a much better opportunity more inline with my strengths/experience and compensation requirements.

Cons

Company is very young, lots of new grads, because of this they have some rules/restrictions that most seasoned professionals will not like/tolerate. Other small things- like sharing hotel rooms, expenses taking up to 8 weeks to be reimbursed, lack of documented policies/procedures - can be frustrating. With the acquisition by Recruit, revenue expectations were very high. In a group of 20, 4 hit quota, then quotas were raised 45% on average. They look for quarter over quarter growth. With seasonality it's just not sustainable and punitive if you sign a customer up for a full year. Also, no mechanisms for negotiating larger/longer deals, same cost to the customer today, tomorrow, signing up for a month, or six months. While they say this is the nature of the auction system, this probably really goes back to having a young salesforce that would abuse those mechanisms. As far career opportunities, in sales your limited, they use the title director for folks who manage small teams. But the company only has two products sold simultaneously, so not many options.

Bad Management

Pros

Free food daily: lunch, breakfast, dinner Great colleagues: bright, talented group to work with Great product: really believe in Indeed as a product Engineers seem to have a great time!

Cons

Lack of training: the on-boarding process for my team was not good. There are no training processes in place at all, and it's sink or swim. Lack of work/life balance: it is expected that you work above and beyond 40 hours, which wouldn't be an issue if work/life balance weren't put forward as one of the great things about the job. Be honest about what you expect from your employees. Don't just say what they want to hear to get them to sign on the bottom line. That creates unrealistic expectations on both sides. Bad management: there's a culture of throwing other people under the bus to save your own hide. The turnover is extremely high in some places, so make sure you ask how many people have done your job in the past year before you taken it (this is highly indicative of poor training and management).
