Pros

The best reasons to work for IBM are one, name recognition, second, the opportunity to work anywhere in the world and finally very good advancement opportunities. I met a lot of great people.

Cons

I found IBM slow moving....also there was this "one size that fits all mentality" that really hurt productivity. The biggest disappointment for me was I thought IBM was a place for growth, training and long term employment. It really turned out to be a typical US company these days...ie no direction, no training and the minute the stock falls there's an employee fire sale...many employees I meet said management cared more about stock price than their welfare...i tend to agree. Also....IBM seems to shed a lot of really good talent at the entry level.

Pros

I joined IBM though the Graduate programme. This has a strong focus on skills development. Each graduate completes more than 6 weeks of training over the two years and is assigned to a number of different projects to provide a variety of experience. The career prospects are good at IBM, you have the opportunity to move into a variety of professions, providing there is a business need. You have continued support from management to meet your goals. They have a big focus on work life balance. Most importantly, working for IBM looks good on your CV should you ever want to leave.

Cons

IBM is a large business, like most corporations it is very much process driven. To complete the simpliest of tasks, something that could be achieved in ten minutes at a smaller company can take up to two weeks to complete. This is not only frustrating but can also be embarassing to client and supplier teams who are much more agile. Also, there is a lot of game playing at IBM, if you want to go far, you have to be prepared to play the game. You won't be rewarded for doing your job well, you have to be preared to network with and influence management.

Pros

Flexibility & opportunities for different job, roles and countries. Generally freedom to move around - an individual manager cannot typically stop you. Interesting technical opportunities especially on customer projects.

Cons

Very intense working environment, lots of pressure on sales side. Focus on small number of people expected to progress well at expense of everyone else. Very heavy burden of reporting and documentation on managers. Very inflexible world wide policies on recruitment, bonus, pay, expenses etc. Necessary to be 'visible' to progress and make an impact on internal projects (not just customer engagements).
