Pros

Benefits are excellent. Job flexibility in where you work, when you work, how you work are very positive reasons to be at IBM. Also, there are very smart and engaging people to work with who have high standards and moral integrity.

Cons

You can feel just like another number. Constant threat of outsourcing has hurt morale and job security is a thing of the past. Teamwork is also lacking because at the end of the day, most employees feel like its they have to look out for themselves. Thus, atmosphere has become more cut-throat and ultimately, a lot of employees have lost any sense of loyalty.

Terrible morale at IBM

Pros

The ability to work from home.

Cons

One of the downsides to this company is management's refusal to appreciate the work of it's employees. As with so many corporate giants of today, senior management is certainly taking care of themselves financially with their bonuses and raises, but not sharing the profits of the company with the employees that really make the profits happen. After the last 15 years of being a 2 and 2+ perfomer, I have received either a 2-3% raise, and many years no raise at all. This particular year was the worst. Two weeks after receiving another 2+ performance rating I was told that my job was reclassified and I'm getting a 15% paycut. This was quietly done to approximately 7000 US employees. Another downside to working at IBM is that you never know when your job will either be eliminated or outsourced to another country, so there is no stability in working there.

Pros

Salaries are good. Work-life balance is very good -- I was able to work at home regularly. Basically, I was able to take off all the time I needed, but performance expectations were not adjusted accordingly. There are many smart people at IBM Research, and it's possible to learn a lot. Seminars on various topics are offered constantly. I found that the variety of work was very good until the last year or two that I was there. I was able to transition from desktop programming to Web programming. Everyone who works at Research in Hawthorne has their own office, which is another plus.

Cons

The performance rating system is seriously broken. When I did well, I was told that "Your work was good this year" -- nothing more. Details were forthcoming only when management thought that my performance was inadequate. I was forced to resign after being given a negative performance review and being given 6 months to improve my performance. This trial period was a joke, as I worked myself to the bone to meet the goals that were given to me, and I did meet the goals, but was told that I had not met the goals. I believe that the motive for these actions on the part of management was age discrimination.
