Pros

IBM is a big and diverse company with great work-life balance. IBM research, as a industrial research lab, still offer sufficient opportunities for publication. The managers and evaluation systems appreciate external recognition from research communities. The employee is also able to collaborate with colleagues from different areas such as business department, software development and others. I also like the internal courses for your own career development.

Cons

A number of researchers are working on pure development projects, which is supposed to be completed in the software development department. The company is large and bureaucratic which slows down the decision process. No free perks around.

Pros

Great place to learn from others

Cons

Focus is given to those who only exist to contribute to IBM, without regards for any personal life. In other words while IBM touts "work/life balance" as being important, it actually encourages an "all work / no personal llfe" atmosphere. The moment a person realizes that they need to slow down and re-claim their personal life, IBM loses interest in that person and labels them as "making too much money...", hoping that the person will eventually get frustrated from a lack of forward financial progress, and simply quit. Alternatively, if the person doesn't quit, they get laid off.

Pros

Fairly good pay & medical benefits.

Cons

The vast majority of technical jobs in the United States are going overseas to India, China, Brazil & a little bit to Russia. Opportunities to excel at IBM in the U.S. are diminishing every week & every month. Pay raises are non-existent or minimal. You can quickly get the feeling that IBM does not present a level playing field to everyone for promotions & career advancement.
