Pros

If you want to the chances to spread your wings are there but they won't coming running to find you. The PBC system of appraisal, although sometimes criticized does provide a basis for you and your manager to make sure you have something to guide you throughout the year, most other companies have very little in this form. If you have the time and the energy there is always plenty going on that you can take part in outside your normal role. Be that in the formal programs through mentoring students or getting involved in innovative events like HackDay you can easily gain experience in other areas that can be used to progress you through the business.

Cons

Sometimes it can be hard to find the person you need to talk to and it is easy to get caught up in some of the more complex processes that seem to be created. And to that although the business wants to go in one direction and work more collaboratively the processes and sales systems sometimes work against this, everyone knows that but doesn't seem like something easy to change.

Pros

Great work-life flexibility IBM strongly encourages home office and remote work locations (Green in a big way) Stable overall company

Cons

Little growth opportunity for US employees - particularly one you reach Sr. Technical Staff Expect 3% raises bi-yearly Rediculous expense and travel freezes (don't expect to ever see your mgr face-to-face if you or he/she is remote) Low morale due to small raises, little growth, and perpetual layoffs and outsourcing Little cooperation between sales and direct marketing Middle management is given little empowerment due to tight-fisted budgets Pays its technical staff hourly at rates that are 15% below market; dependent on OT to make up for this

Cons

compensation rollbacks through pay and other benefits Educational and experiential resources (PEOPLE) not well utilized unless part of the favored click Too big and cumbersome with multiple layers of management to turn the ship in a timely manner Group "Think"
