Pros

At IBM you work with some of the smartest people in the world. It still makes me proud to have been associated with an organization that has the reputation for excellence that IBM has. Smart people, great name, and in addition, IBM is so large that their are a glut of resources at your fingertips. So much so, that sometimes you get so used to having so many resources that you become a little spoiled. There is a department or a person for every possible business, sales, or service function. The benefits are also world class. I can remember when I started paying about $34.00 per paycheck to cover my entire family and didn't realize how inexpensive that was.

Cons

IBM is very large, but the downside to that is how long takes to do anything. The red tape is legendary. It takes a long time for an oceanliner to turn around. Promotions can be slow. Progress of any kind takes time and people like to stick to the way things have always been done. If you have a new idea, or process, you have to move heaven and earth to get it implemented. Management can also promote on who you know, not what you know. But this is typical corporate america. It goes without saying that the level of political intrigue is dense at IBM. Kissing bottom is taken to an art form and there are more angles on everything you say and do than a billiards game.

Pros

IBM has great health benefits for the employee and his family. We have been very happy with our insurance. Flexible Hours- IBM allows employees to set their own hours when it does not affect their work. This can be an advantage when trying to spend time with family or a disadvantage when you have to work around others flexible schedules. IBM allows employees in some jobs to work from home. I have worked from home for a few years now and I like that I do not have a commute and that I get to see my family throughout the day during my breaks.

Cons

IBM has an overloaded workforce. As a company they are downsizing their headcount while still attempting to do the same amount or more. Workers are overworked and put in more hours than should be expected. My position had limited advancement opportunities. In technical fields it is hard to move up past a certain point without leaving the technical side and going into management.

Pros

Work life balance is respected at IBM! There are unlimited opportunities for gaining valuable work experience. IBM is such a big company that you can change your career and still work at IBM! IBM supports teamwork and collaboration across within and across business units. Overall it is a gret place to work!

Cons

If you don't negotiate a high salary when you get hired you will struggle for the rest of your carreer. There are constant budget constraints that limit salary increases and bonuses even when you get a high performance rating.
