Business Outlook

Pros

If I'm to take anything positive away from my experience at this company, it would be the people. I've met some good people who genuinely care about the business - it's just a shame the business doesn't care about them.

Cons

Unfortunately I could write a book on the cons. The company operates a very siloed nature and I (like many) found the role was stifling and less stimulating than I was promised, especially for talented and creative team members. Fostering a more collaborative and integrated environment could enhance overall job satisfaction. The company talk about supporting mental health and other important work place issues, however I have found the culture is one of bullying, intimidation, poor management and they have zero qualms in managing people and/or entire teams out of the business. They do this by purposefully setting unachievable KPIs, that you have no chance of hitting, then when you don't hit them they say you're incompetent with a view to managing you out of the business. If that doesn't make you leave then they will make your working day so miserable through regular bare-faced bullying that you will feel like you have no choice but to go. I work in the concrete products division which is severely under-performing due to poor management, continually making poor business decisions, combined with zero investment and attrition at the rate of 2/3 people leaving per week. Making a very toxic environment. This poor culture goes across all divisions of the UK business. I have heard first-hand how they've treated other staff members. For example, one ex colleague who doesn't drink, told me how they drugs and alcohol tested him. When that came back as zero they continued their campaign of bullying and when that didn't work they took him to one side and paid him off. Sadly, there are many other awful stories, but there isn't enough room on here to write them all down. They send out company wide employee surveys, so you can have 'have your say', but the results are so poor they never release them - ever. They invested millions into a CRM called Salesforce, which governs every aspect of your role to the point of it being suffocating and counterproductive to you doing your job. They have restructured their bonus scheme to tie in with Salesforce, making it impossible for you to earn any bonus, so you will be the epitome of a busy fool. I could go on, but my advice to anyone considering working for Holcim, give it some serious thought. There's a lot of unhappy people working at this company and if you are looking for longevity and progression, you may be jeopardising your career, your health and your mental well-being.
