Pros

I initially worked at Personio as a contractor, but after 3 months decided to take a permanent role. This was largely due to my observations on our team culture. I’ve worked in scale ups for 10+ years and in environments where ego abounds. It’s really refreshing to work somewhere where your craft is respected, people assume good intent and are just generally nice. I personally love to build and create and have autonomy on my projects and what I do. That’s why scale ups work for me and Personio is growing really healthily and a really exciting scale up to be part of. Personio also understood my personal reasons for wanting to work part-time and accommodated this.

Cons

Typical scale up challenges. Shifting priorities and a lot to do! There are a lot of people at the company who haven’t worked anywhere else and it’s their first scale up environment, so reading some of the more recently reviews I get a sense some of the more longer term employees are struggling with the pace of change. ‘It’s not how it used to be’ etc etc. But that’s a natural part of any company growing up and we’re in it for the long-term so that’s necessary.

Pros

Smart collaborative colleagues at the lower IC levels.

Cons

Personio is a dying company. The over-complexity of the company's technical systems is comical. Every attempt to simplify seems to lead to more complexity as things get half migrated and left to rot. Engineering leadership seems clueless and unable to present a clear plan-of-action to get things on track. Principal engineers force engineering time to be spent on silly projects that don't move the needle long-term. There is an overall aversion to taking the time to learn deeply about systems being used. Personio feels like a combination of all of the negatives of both a startup and a mature tech company, with none of the positives. The tech is half assed and duct taped together, but still somehow everything moves at a glacial pace. There is a mass shared delusion at the company that an IPO is in reach. No investor is going to buy this company's junk shares on the open market.
