Lovely company but evolution & salary are not ok - Frontend Engineer Personio Employee Review

Pros

- Great remote policy - Amazing office in Munich - Great engineers with a lot of collaboration in between teams and a lot of hard-workers - Consequent development budget but you can use it only on really specific things (not for German class for example) - Good benefits policy - Always nice events, they really push to federate the teams spirit in between people

Cons

Bad management and lack of transparency, even if your own manager told you you exceed expectations or you're impact and work are outstanding you will not get a chance to apply for promotion because "the promotion level is high" and "you need to be in the company since more than a year". Seems like they are not open to admit recruitment issue and people working hard even over expectations are not promoted and doesn't even get a salary review. Salary is low for Germany, salary doesn't considered degrees neither experience (if it's not one of the big tech companies) but just match their salary ranges. So people getting hired after you will get better salary than you even if you have more years of experience or degrees. And you will not get salary review once a year. Heavy feedback policy, as an employee you are permanently ask to give feedbacks on your peers but you're never asked for upper management feedback. I start to wonder if there is any possibilities to professionally grew in this company!

Smart collaborative colleagues at the lower IC levels.

Cons

Personio is a dying company. The over-complexity of the company's technical systems is comical. Every attempt to simplify seems to lead to more complexity as things get half migrated and left to rot. Engineering leadership seems clueless and unable to present a clear plan-of-action to get things on track. Principal engineers force engineering time to be spent on silly projects that don't move the needle long-term. There is an overall aversion to taking the time to learn deeply about systems being used. Personio feels like a combination of all of the negatives of both a startup and a mature tech company, with none of the positives. The tech is half assed and duct taped together, but still somehow everything moves at a glacial pace. There is a mass shared delusion at the company that an IPO is in reach. No investor is going to buy this company's junk shares on the open market.
