The cons differ by service lines or operation units. The service line that I was affiliated with is called AIM (Analytics Information Management).
For example, I had experience with software A and B beforehand, but they put me on a project that requires knowledge on C. Not getting your ideal project could happen in consulting, but the leadership keeps on staffing people to projects that are not a match at all. All of this is done because the revenue and the utilization matters for the leaderships' bonus. The fact that whether consultants are staffed in a project or not is what decides whether he/she will get past the probation period.
They also do not care about what you want to do. Even after the probation period, if not in a project for a while they will ask the him/her to leave the company. In my experience - even after handing in my notice, they have bullied me every single week by asking whether I have a new job lined after Deloitte - so that they could kick me out sooner and pay me less.
It's not the consultant's fault that he/she is not staffed in a project - they just don't have enough projects. What's worse is they could ask to change career tracks completely just because there aren't projects related with software A, B, or C.
