Demise of a brand

Pros

A once great place to work for, acquired by ARCADIS US, now defunct brand.

Cons

Upper management sold out brand and employees for stocks and money. Veteran managers took buyouts and left. New managers are in power grab for themselves. Managers are using ARCADIS as scapegoat to thin out the employees. First massive terminations, they call layoffs, in company history in 2011. Veteran employees are being forced out through low to no raises and pressure to work uncompensated to be more billable while being told company is not performing well. New, younger employees are promoted too fast without experience or mentors and given glowing reports of company performance.

Pros

Benefits are average to above-average. The people (colleagues) are terrific; mostly professional staff that are dedicated to their profession and passionate about what they do and the clients they serve. There is an ambitious, aggressive mind-set that is focused on growth of markets, revenue and profit.

Cons

US company is based on acquisitions of similar companies resulting in a culture that is not unified and can widely differ from one office to another. Whereas benefits have become more competitive in the last few years, the business systems are still lagging firms of similar size. The upgrade to a new project management program helps, but business management of the company still depends on manual spreadsheets. Turnover is relatively high and lay-offs occur often enough to result in staff protecting their job rather than fully engaging in team efforts. Financial and quarterly results impact management decisions, making the job a daily grind of achieving aggressive billable and profit goals. Managers have little time to cultivate staff or focus on their own development -- both are viewed as an employee responsibility. Corporate support is minimal with high turn-over of primarily non-professional level staff.

Pros

Lots of work, so you don't have to worry too much about staying billable. However, the good opportunities are hard to come by (i.e. ones to learn and advance, work reasonable schedules, get recognition for your work). I've heard other offices are a lot better to be in than HR.

Cons

It's not a friendly office environment. People are very competitive or completely checked out. The main problem is the way they setup 'supervisors.' Most junior staff do very little to no direct work for their supervisor. It's a once a year meeting kind of thing, with supervisors taking no interest and never 'going to bat' for people getting raises/advancements. Also yes, as others have noted, the management changes frequently in this office, I don't know what it means, but it's not good. Your billability goal will be much higher than similar companies. You are pretty much expected to work overtime to meet these goals.
