Pros

You'll be surrounded by some of the smartest people around which allows growth and development. Amazon strives to be innovative and say ahead of the curve which offers a level of pride and fosters drive in employees to continue pushing to be the best. There are a lot of opportunities to work in different departments. I don't think anyone is ever bored working for Amazon as there's always more than enough work to do. Many projects are really cool and exciting to be involved in.

Cons

Amazon is a tough place to work if you need a work-life balance. I sometimes feel guilty when I take vacation or am ill because of the things I miss when I'm gone. That said, I'm never 100% out as my e-mail is available on my phone and I'm always connected. Interdepartmental communication could be improved. Each team operates somewhat separately and communication is almost non-existent until there's an emergency.

chaotic with unreasonable demands

Pros

The signing bonuses are good and the stock options are what keep most of the people there. Unfortunately, many people are very burnt out and unhappy because of the high demands for hours and performance.

Cons

The high turnover makes it a constantly changing and chaotic work environment. The demand for hours and performance is unreasonable especially if you have a family. No work-life balance here. They give big signing bonuses, but it's like making a deal with the devil.

Pros

- Brand. Amazon is a big name, period. - A lot of processes are nowhere in place. You can take ownership to set them. - A lot of direct hostility is done with in terms of work environment, thanks to its open culture. However, subtle stuff remains. - Yes..as with other review, you will find some very bright people here - even in areas that are not related to software development at all.

Cons

- Its highly chaotic. And worse is that they take pride in being chaotic; and continue to work in that fashion. IMO, it leads to huge wastage of resources(mental and others), repetition of work, and unnecessary confusion. - Average compensation for a heavy work load - Bluff sells. - You can end up in a project without having a clear project definition, scope and resource set! Half way down the project - you realize that a lot of what you did was not intended to be done! - BEWARE! There is no clear goal setting for you. This leads to a lot of subjectivity in terms of you getting rated. I don't know about other departments - but talking about mine. - Lots of fire-fight, less of planned work.
