Pros

Culture (Unique vs other consulting firm): Definitely more collaborative culture than other up-and-out firm, less feeling of competition with your colleagues, more about one team mindset. Senior MDs who grew up with the firm all firmly believe in doing the right thing for the client, be practical and put ourselves in their shoes. Compensation & Benefits: Competitive to MBB in compensation & benefits, including free healthcare for employee and reasonable cost for families. Paternity leave is very good with 8wk full paid + 4 wk half paid, and maternity leave is extra month. Challenging & Impactful Work: Most of the work have direct bottom line impact within 12 months, so great if you want to make impact, less great if you want to do 5-year strategy roadmap. It also presents a lot of hands-on operational experiences such as actually running RPFs, conducting negotiation on behalf of the clients, which is great learning for young consultant who aim to be a future operators in companies. Fascinating but Diverse Colleague: Different from other firms where most of your colleagues are ambitious young MBAs / Ivy school undergrads, AlixPartners have tons of people that came from the industry (often do have MBAs previously) so they bring very practical & diverse skillset and experiences. One of my favorite is to learn what my teammate did in their prior life during team dinner.

Cons

Transparency on performance & compensation evaluation: Definitely more influenced by visibility and who you work with, less rigorous compared to bigger firms. This is especially an issue when new hires got inflated wages but homegrown talents experienced wage compression. “Pods” with different cultures: Different practice in the firm definitely have its own unique culture, which I think should continue. However, there should be more common culture / practice, especially when it comes to things like staffing mgmt, compensations, etc. Branding in Large Corporate & Outside of US/Europe: While well respected in Consulting & PE world, AlixPartners is till a smaller brand name compared to MBB & B4 in the public eyes, which may be a negative. However, with a good MBA/Undergrad alum network and personal networking, this can typically be overcome.

Pros

Great pay, great healthcare, supportive environment to learn new things, generous travel per diem, hard-working and down-to-earth people

Cons

Very long hours, poor 401k contribution, it can be difficult to get a real read on how you are performing (is utilization an issue if project feedback is good? what are the real criteria we're evaluated on?), bonus and promotion decisions are a "black box" and it can be difficult to know what to expect at year end.
