I applied online. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at Target in Nov 2013
Interview
Applied online and got an e-mail the next day from the HRTL saying to call the target store to discuss my application, called when I got the email and did a short interview with her asking the following questions: Why do you want to work for target? What hours/days can you work? Can you work the upcoming holiday weeks? I answered all the questions and she scheduled me for an in store interview 2 days later. I went to the interview and was interviewed my 2 very nice girls at once (one asked the questions the other was kind of shadowing her and trying to learn the process of interviewing) right after that interview I was interviewed by a guy who they said is their boss, very friendly and easy going, right after the interview was done I was offered a job pending background check and a passed drug test within 24 hours.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Questions asked for in person interview:
Name a time you worked in a group and accomplished a goal?
If I spoke to a teacher or supervisor what would they say would be your strengths and weakness?
Why do you want to work for target?
Talk about a time you helped someone go above and beyond for a task?
Name a time you had multiple tasks to do at once and how you completed that?
If a customer comes in asking for a pair of blue size 3 shoes for her son and you don't have them what do you do? (Say that you would check the back, call other stores to see if it's in stock, check online/advise the guest to check online, take a rain check and definitely say you would recommend the guest buy a different style/color pair of shoes)
Say you're working the register and you're ringing up the customers things and the computer says an item is 19.99 but the guest says it's 17.99 what do you do? (I was very skeptical that this was the answer but it definitely is, say that you would trust the customer and change the price because you wouldn't want to permanently lose the guest over 2 dollars and that the guest is more important than 2 dollars.)
I applied in-person. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Target
Interview
I applied for seasonal help. The kiosk application was more like a psychological test than anything else. Upon finishing, I was encouraged to pick up the adjacent phone for an on the spot interview. I was told to go to Food Avenue for the interview, and as this was my first time in Target, I didn't know where this was, so I left. A few days later they called and said they wanted to schedule a second interview. When I got to the interview, I realized I didn't have to dress up as much as I did because the person before me in jeans and plaid polo was also hired.
I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Target (Orange City, FL) in Nov 2013
Interview
Applied online, got a call three days later to schedule a phone interview. Had the phone interview three days after that. I was asked the same questions listed by others on this site:
- Why do you want to work for Target?
- Name a time when you had to work as part of a team to accomplish a task.
- Name a time when you exceeded customer expectations.
- Name a time when you solved a problem.
The phone interview went well because I was prepared, and I was scheduled for a second, in-person interview three days later. The next interviewer asked the same cookie-cutter questions you can find here:
- Tell me about yourself and why you want to work for Target.
- Name a time when you made a mistake, and tell me what you did to correct it.
- Imagine a customer came to you saying she wanted a size of shoe we did not have in that particular style. How would you handle the situation?
- Imagine you are checking out a customer and something rings up as $X.XX. The customer says the price was supposed to be $X.XX. How would you handle that? (Note: After I gave my answer, the interviewer told me "Just so you know, we always correct the price up to a certain limit, so there is no need to hold up customers to check a small price discrepancy.")
I was told the interview went well, but that they did not make hiring decisions on Friday, so I was asked to come back on the following Monday to speak with the HR manager.
On Monday I was told I had to complete a questionnaire on the computer, which only took a few minutes and was basically just a repeat of a few questions that were in the original application. After I finished I was taken into a back room and offered a seasonal position for the whopping sum of $8 an hour and told that the position would end in January. I was also told that they are open all night on Black Friday and was expected to work during that time.
I was given a conditional offer of employment contingent on me passing a drug test and background check. The drug test had to be done at a nearby lab within 24 hours and was paid for by Target. I was told that background checks "were taking a while to complete" and that she didn't even know when the next orientation would be, that they would call to let me know as late as the night before, and it was possible that it would be rescheduled after that. I was also told that I would be required to buy my own uniform - khaki pants and red shirt.
The whole process was drawn out, unorganized, and made me think less of Target as a company. I couldn't believe how little they are paying their employees considering how successful they are - Wal-Mart pays more, has an organized hiring process, and is more flexible.
I accepted their ridiculous offer, but after I got home from the drug test I applied at every fast-food place I could think of. I would be getting paid the same at McDonald's and it would be a less stressful job with more perks.
