The process took 6 days. I interviewed at Microsoft in Aug 2008
Interview
Was asked questions about technical architecture and was asked to draw diagrams on the board. I had to say several times "i don't know" just to be honest. They were asking extremely technical questions that may/may not be relevant to the positions just to gauge my technical level of understanding.
The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Microsoft (Seattle, WA) in Feb 2010
Interview
I was interviewed through my Universities hiring program so my first interview was at my universities career center. She (the interviewer) was very nice and we discussed some basic program management questions focusing mainly on my past experience. It was a short 20 minute interview and ended well.
A week later I was asked to come in for a full day interview. I got there around 8:30am and waited in Microsoft's very nice recruitment center. After a short while I was asked to come into a small side room where my recruiter (who was not the women I had been talking to via email, she had apparently been busy) asked me a few questions about my expectations and mood. She then explained the process and called a shuttle to take me to my first interview.
I interviewed mainly with the Sharepoint team and started with a first interview which focused on asking me a series of design questions around hypothetical products. After I finished I was given a few pointered and we walked to the second round together. The second round was essentially a repeat of round one and I was again taken to round 3. In between round 2 and 3 I was told to wait in a lobby which took about 10 minutes. When my 3rd round interviewer came we went to her office and went over a few basic interest questions before going to lunch.
For the lunch portion I was given a prepaid card for anything I wanted in the cafeteria. This was probably the worst portion for me since I was told before hand that I was supposed to ask questions that would get my interviewer talking so I had a chance to eat. I struggled to think of anything truly interesting and we spent alot of time awkwardly silent.
After lunch the third interview ended just like the first and second and I was taken to a odd sitting area in front of the elevators to wait for the fourth. The fourth interview was the weakest most likely as I was exhausted by that point.
After my interviews were over I was taken back to the recruitment center where the recruiter told me they would contact me by the following Tuesday. I waited until the following Wendnesday and contacted her to ask the results of my interview. She was slightly annoyed seeming that I was asking her but she responded and unfortunately told me that I was not going to be given an offer.
