I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at HubSpot
Interview
I was contacted by a recruiter. We chatted for 30 minutes on the phone, and she described their tech screening process was by sending candidates a link to an everyday like problem at work.
Even though I solved it, they decided not to move forward with the message:
"based on the current pool of candidates, we're not going to be moving forward at this point. We have found that the code test tends to be a very strong indicator of success in the remainder of the interview process as well as on the job."
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Solve a coding assignment within 3 hours from the time of opening.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at HubSpot (Dublin, Dublin) in Mar 2020
Interview
I was contacted by a recruiter and after a quick talk about typical questions as "why HubSpot?", "why you want to leave your current position?", the recruiter sent me a code challenge.
You decide when you want to do the code challenge, there's no pressure on a deadline to do it.
This code challenge it's about consuming an API, receive a JSON , do some process with it using data structures and send a POST with the solution. You've 3 hours to do it and you can use the code language you want. I did it on time correctly and the recruiter came back to me to do a technical interview on site. They didn't have any resources or maybe they had more interviews but they proposed to make this interview in the following month.
Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, the interview was via zoom. The technical interview is divided in 3 parts:
- System Design: tinyUrl
- Database: create a social media
- Coding: nGram
I felt some of the interviewers didn't have too many experience doing interviews because it was really difficult to understand what they were asking. I asked for some examples to understand the questions but the examples given weren't so good. I think they were more focused in follow the interviews guidelines they have in their company than trying to focus on the candidate they were interviewing.
Despite that, I was able to go through and I felt I was doing good during all the interviews. There were no bad feedback during the process from the interviewers.
Even, I asked after finishing each part if the answers given were correct and if there were other way to do it or to improve but apparently, I was doing good according to the feedback received during the interviews.
My surprise came when the recruiter came back to me saying they couldn't make me an offer because I didn't reach the level. I asked for more feedback and the recruiter gave it to me very kindly.
The feedback given was a bit contradictory. The feedback said I was able to solve all problems in all interviews but for example in the database part they wrote I didn't show too much knowledge about indexing and in the system design part they wrote that I showed good knowledge about indexing.......
It seemed that they wrote some randoms things just to say No.
In my opinion, I didn't learn too much from doing this interview and I feel I was rejected before even starting all this interviews because of the global situation with Covid-19.
If you are not going to hire or put the level really really high because of the situation, please let the people know before starting a process of almost 2 months.
Thanks for taking the time to write a review. From reading your feedback it sounds like it was a close decision and I can assure you that it wasn't influenced by COVID-19. We're continuing to hire senior software engineers in Dublin and while the hiring bar will always remain high, we often revisit previous applications when positions open up on other teams, so I know our team would love to stay in touch with you if you're open to it.
Best,
Becky
I would like to congratulate Hubspot team for their amazing recruiting process.
The online code exercise is exciting and challenging at the the same time. It evaluates hands-on ability, experience and concepts all at the same time.
There was a really nice panel of on-site interviewers in Dublin who made me feel comfortable to do my best.
The recruiting team made me feel wanted all along.
I would highly recommend taking part in this process as it is enjoyable and we can learn a lot from it. Would also encourage preparation as it will help on the day and pay off in the end.
Wow, this made my day - thanks so much for the praise and kind words. Our team invests a lot of time and energy to make sure the end-to-end process thoughtful, transparent, and gives a good indication of what work would look like here at HubSpot.
