      Sales Trainer Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at HubSpot (Cambridge, MA) in Aug 2017

      Interview

Applied online and was contacted by a recruiting coordinator on the same day. Had a 30-minute phone screen with a recruiter one week, a 30-minute call with a team member the next week, and a 2-hour in-person interview with four team members at the office the week after. The following week, the recruiter called to let me know they were moving ahead with other candidates. Everyone was forthcoming and nice throughout the process, but there was also something a little weird about the interactions. For a company that prides itself on being "human," I couldn't tell you what was unique about any of the people I spoke to. The interviews felt more like checklists than natural conversations, and I was asked the same questions by every person—it felt like the interviewers were looking for very specific responses. I think that’s because HubSpot is very data-driven, and everyone used the same “HubSpotty” brand-speak to answer my questions. They also didn’t offer up a lot of details about the job itself: I felt like I had to dig for that info, and when I did, the nature of the job seemed different than advertised, much more regimented with little room for putting your own spin on the job. I suppose I should have figured that out going in since HubSpot is so data-driven, but it was a different tone than I'd anticipated. Obviously, a lot of people are really happy here, and the company is very successful. The vibe was just a little off for me. I think you need to be a specific sort of person to be successful here, and I just don’t fit the brand, which is fine. If you're planning to apply here, I'd definitely recommend doing extensive reading on their blogs, doing their inbound certification, and maybe setting up an informational interview ahead of time. That said, the experience was mostly positive overall, and I appreciated that the process was efficient and transparent.

Hi there, thank you for taking the time to write a review, and I'm glad that you found our interview process moved along at a good pace and that you found the feedback and experience very transparent - that's one of our core goals. I am sorry that you found our process to lack the human element. You're absolutely right that we're data driven and strive to have a very structured interview process that tests on certain skills, but that shouldn't impact you feeling like your interviewers are trying to get to know you as a person as well. Your feedback is incredibly valuable - I'll work with our team to ensure we're keeping the human element every step of the way. Best, Becky
