Some in person basic questions and technical questions with snacks offered, and then a code review. Had to bring in code sample to go over with them. More words and more.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Google in Apr 2018
Interview
Got approached by a recruiter through linkedin for a position within GCP. Process went pretty fast from there with 4 formal and couple of informal interviews.
Formal ones were
1) Role related: Interview was with an experienced GCP engineer where I was asked questions ranging from cloud technologies in general to some specific questions to GCP. I was expected to verbally demonstrate design, technology choices and architecture but not to code anything
2) Cognitive ability: Interview was with one of the senior executive, google doesn't ask typical brain teaser questions anymore and rather focus on giving you real life scenarios with followup questions based on your answers.
Both of above interviews were back to back over the hangouts. After that the final phase of interviews also consisted of 2 back to back onsite interviews as below:
3) Leadership & Googlyness: This interview was also conducted by someone on a ladership position where the goal was to test me being culturally fit for google as well as my ability to grow within google as a leader (if it comes to that!). Its expected from you to answer these in the light of real-life situations from your past career.
4) Panel interviews: This interview had 2 parts, main one focuses on you presenting a solution to case study where panel interviewers would take different roles as a customer and ask you questions and regularly interrupt you. Time management can became tricky in this one because of regular questions as well as presenting different architectures and giving a demo within GCP.
Second part of this interview consists of a short presentation on something related to your passion where you tell audience on something you like doing besides work.

Question 1
Recruiter would send you topics around which you should prepare for the interviews. You should read those areas well
I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Google (Mountain View, CA) in Dec 2017
Interview
Had a phone screen, followed by several rounds of onsite interviews. Some of the technical phone screen questions were copied from the internet with one question being poorly described and unsolvable. While some of the onsite interviews went smoothly, others were disorganized. One of the interviewers seemed technically weak and did not seem interested in answering clarifying questions. Not sure if this is a symptom of chaos and bureaucracy in the company. However, recruiters were nice enough to follow through every step of the interview process, including rejection after onsite interview.
