Pros

Good people but direction of the company is questionable The people are really nice to work with and they have good in-house technical knowledge. Benefits are average to above average. There are opportunities for growth due to the size of the organization. Improved management systems.

Cons

It may be a product of success but growth has created a distance between Sr. management and the rest of the company as well as a disconnect between departments. There is constant competition for interesting work and people that have it tend to hoard. Jr. staff are undervalued and Sr. staff are overpaid. Too many chiefs syndrome but nobody is willing to budge. Stark divide between 'technical' and 'project management' areas. Company culture is to coddle senior project staff as long as they win new business even if it is toxic to the operations. This is often at the expense of supporting staff who often are treated as expendable.

Very tough place to work

Pros

- Very focused on audits, regulations, following policy - Good reputation in the field - Fairly good benefits

Cons

- Stark division between "project management" and "technical" staff, meaning unless you have at least 10 years of experience, you will be stuck doing endless administrative minutiae, with no chance to show or even develop your other skills - Very difficult for junior/PM staff to get ANY interesting work, leading to endemic low morale among this group - Very by-the-book, hierarchical, micromanaging - Opportunities for advancement/recognition basically limited to who you know (i.e., if someone influential takes an interest in you)--otherwise, very difficult to showcase or even develop your technical skills - Tone-deaf, out-of-touch senior management

DAI - A great place to work

Pros

DAI is a leader in USAID-funded international development, has strong technical expertise, and increasingly good project management. As an employee-owned company, there is a sense of shared ownership and responsibility--and a sense that employees do have some influence over the direction of the company and the work environment. In comparison with it's largest competitor, Chemonics, DAI has a great benefits package and a good work-life balance (partly because DAI bids more selectively). I have worked at several companies and organizations in international development and DAI is where I want to stay.

Cons

The downsides are minor, but occasionally I do find that--in the name of ongoing improvement--DAI actually makes a step backward by discarding things that work. As part of DAI's performance-based evaluation approach, there needs to be consequences when people do not perform--particularly when someone puts the company at risk.
