The position is part-time (currently 19.5 hours per week) and is limited

to a term of three years. The fixed-term nature of the contract is based

on the provisions of the German Act on Fixed-Term Employment Con-

tracts in Academia (WissZeitVG). The teaching load amounts to 2 hours

per week. The PhD is part of the role.

The Institute of English and American Studies comprises two independ-

ent divisions: General English and American Studies, and the Division

of Foreign Language Education in Primary Schools (FBG) – English. The

division of English and American Studies conducts teaching and re-

search across the entire field of English and American Studies, with a

focus on the complex transformations of English-speaking cultures in

a globalised world. Particular areas of focus include literature and (vis-

ual) culture from the 18th to the 21st century, Material Studies, Cul-

tural Studies, Postcolonial Studies, Applied Linguistics, Cognitive Lin-

guistics, language practice, and foreign language didactics, particularly

in the areas of Content and Language Integrated Learning and Task-

Based Language Teaching. Foreign Language Education in Primary

Schools focuses in research, teaching and knowledge transfer on the

development and application of the latest methods for teaching and

learning English at primary level.

Your responsibilities

Your responsibilities will involve working in the field of English linguis-

tics. These include, in particular:

• Engaging in research, teaching and academic self-governance

• Delivering independent teaching in English and American Studies

amounting to 2 contact hours per week, as well as associated supervi-

sion, examination and administrative duties

• Postgraduate Further qualification (PhD) in the field of English lin-

guistics; possible topics include, for example, the research fields of lan-

guage assessment, German Learner English, machine translation and

other related areas

• Assistance in the organisation of conferences, workshops and guest

lectures

• Participation in publication projects, research projects and the prep-

aration of external funding applications

• Support with the administration of the Institute’s international part-

nerships (e.g. regarding student placements abroad).

Your profile

• a successfully completed university degree (excluding a Bachelor’s

degree) in English or American Studies

• plans to pursue a PhD at this institute in the field of English linguis-

tics (to be outlined in a short synopsis, max. 1 A4 page)

• Excellent command of English and German

• Ability to work in a team, reliability, flexibility

The following are advantageous:

• Previous academic focus on English linguistics (e.g. demonstrated by

a Master’s thesis in this field) and the ability to contribute to at least

one of the research priorities of the Chair of English Linguistics (e.g.

corpus linguistics, computational linguistics, sociophonetics, auto-

matic speech recognition, machine translation)

• An interest in descriptive and inferential statistics as well as program-

ming

• An interest in and willingness to actively participate in improving the

integration of theory and practice in teacher training programmes
